Denim Day 2022

Rooted Swim ethics - two girls holding hands wearing oversized boyfriend jeans to represent standing up against rape and abuse

TW: sexual abuse

As a female owned, body empowering business, we feel it especially critical to highlight the fact that NO means NO.

We love bikinis, showing off our gorgeous gorgeous bodies. Itty bitty bikinis to full coverage loungewear and firmly stand with the notion that -

There is NO excuse and NEVER and invitation to rape.

Italy 1992

An 18-year-old girl is picked up by a 45-year-old driving instructor for her first lesson. He takes he to an isolated road, pulled her from the car, removed her jeans, and forcefully rapes her.

The man is persecuted, convicted of rape, and sentenced to jail. He appeals the sentence. The case makes it all the way to the Italian Supreme Court. The case is overturned, dismissed and the man is released.

A statement from the Court argued because the victim was wearing very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was not rape but consensual sex.

Enraged by the verdict, within hours the women in the Italian Parliament launched into immediate action and protested by wearing jeans to work.
This call to action motivated and emboldened the California Senate and Assembly to do the same. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against the many erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual violence.
